Story

  • Since the 1990s, the Su family has owned and operated Shanghai Garden, a restaurant nestled in the heart of Seattle’s International District. Together, the family cooks up healthy, but decidedly delicious versions of traditional Chinese dishes, including soups with hand-shaved noodles and steamed dumplings.

    Intentionalist

  • For those of who like solid favorites, consistently well prepared, it is a winner.

    Herbivoracious

  • This place serves some of the best hand-shaven, barley green noodles (with your choice of meat and carrots) you'll ever try in Seattle.

    Thrillist

  • Since 1993, Shanghai Garden has blessed Seattle with tasty and authentic Chinese dishes. The International District spot is sure to leave you stuffed as their portion sizes are meant to share.

    Daily Hive

  • The food comes quickly and a stroll over to the restaurant's large salt-water fish tank makes the time pass even faster. The buzz and energy coming from the customers and staff bustling in and out of the kitchen provides needed punctuations of distraction throughout the meal.

  • Favorite Chinese Restaurant: Shanghai Garden for the Barley Green Hand-Shaven Noodles

    Seattle Times

  • Shanghai Garden, located in Seattle’s International District (Chinatown), serves excellent steamed or fried pork dumplings. Shanghai Garden has a full menu and dumplings are only part of the offerings, other stand out dishes include; the barley green hand shaved noodles, shrimp with chili sauce and the sauteed pea vines.

    Dumpling Hunter

  • What is the best place to get prepared hand-made (or hand-shaven) Asian noodles? Shanghai Garden offers two varieties of hand-shaven noodle: wheat and barley green. I like the barley-green hand-shaven noodles in house special chow mein with assorted meats and seafood; or in the chicken-only chow mein.

SHANGHAI GARDEN RESTAURANT

- THE STORY

Shanghai Garden is a restaurant located in International District of Seattle (formerly known as Chinatown). Chef Hua Te Su began learning the craft of cooking at age twelve under the guidance of his master chefs. He learned everything from the basics of cooking to the best of Shanghai, Taiwanese, Szechuan and Hunan style cuisines with his emphasis on savory, healthy conscious creations. With over fifty plus years of experience, devoted customers of both old and new praise Chef Su's culinary skills.

Chef Su and his wife, Helen, opened a small place in the International District in 1990. They moved to the more spacious location, with its lovely pale pink dining room, on Sixth Avenue Seattle two years later. After realizing that there were no Chinese restaurants with healthy choices on their menu, Chef Su was inspired to show that Chinese food can be nutritiously healthy as well as flavorful. He has always created dishes with the idea in mind that food should be nourishing. Despite the stigma that Chinese food is “unhealthy”, Su has incorporated nutritious choices in his menu like brown rice, barley grass noodles as well as selected ingredients that would give health benefits.

In 1996, they opened their second location in Issaquah Washington. After serving the Eastside community for 21 great years, it was an extremely difficult decision to close the long time establishment in 2016 to revamp the business into their son Dan's concept and idea. The location reopened as Krawbar (80 Front Street North, Suite 1 - Issaquah, Washington 98027) in 2018, it is an Asian inspired seafood boil restaurant and raw oyster bar. Check it out!

In 2005, their four children, Kathy, Christine, Betty and Dan took over the ownership of their family business after the loss of their mother to cancer on Mother's Day weekend.

Over the years customers have watched their children grow up in the restaurant industry since the opening of the first location. Now grown up with their own families and children, the Su siblings will continue their parents’ legacy and pass on the legacy to their own children.
